Demystifying Learning Challenges

Updated: Nov 17, 2023

When students are first diagnosed with a learning disability, it can be very frustrating and disappointing. It sounds to them like someone is telling them that something is “wrong” with them and that their cognitive abilities are somewhat compromised. This can cause anger and frustration for the parent as well as the student. These reactions are completely normal and can be a bit frightening.

Demystifying Learning Challenges

Speaking with a teacher or tutor that has a background working with students with special needs can be a big help at this point. We can sit the child and parent down and try to reassure them that this does not mean in any way that the child is “stupid” or incapable of learning and achieving like the rest of the students in his class. What it comes down to is the child learns differently. Literally, the child’s brain is wired differently but certainly capable of functioning and operating at a high level. It is imperative that he learn new strategies for processing information through the three primary modalities: visual, auditory, kinesthetic. He will need new techniques for analysis and problem solving. With the help of a competent and knowledgeable instructor, he can adapt to the learning challenges and begin to excel.

We have found that it can be really useful to demystify the learning process and explain to our students how their learning differences may affect them and how they can slowly but surely learn to overcome these difficulties. The demystification process can shed light on why he is having a hard time and help him to feel better about himself and his prospect for academic success. We want all of our students to feel good about themselves and their potential for growth and advancement.
